THIS PICKLEBALL
PLAYLIST WILL KEEP
YOUR FEET LOOSE
AND YOUR SPIRITS
HIGH
From Pat Benatar to Run DMC, Baltimore pickleballer Rocky Brown’s picks are adrenaline in the form of songs
Rocky Brown will admit that when he’s on the court, he’s often conducting business and playing simultaneously. That’s why the Realtor from Howard County, Maryland, usually has an earbud in one ear. But when he switches away from real estate, it’s music that streams through his headphones.
Brown is currently playing at about a 4.5 ranking and recently stepped away from duties as director of the local Play Pickleball league, which he had managed since 2016. “Once we grew into three nights a week, it became too much of a time commitment,” he says.
But that doesn’t mean Brown isn’t still putting in plenty of time playing, both on his new backyard court and in the local league. Depending on where and with whom he’s playing, his playlist will vary. “Some people like to listen to music to warm up, but I actually like it while I’m playing,” Brown explains. “It keeps me loose and free-spirited, even when I’m not making good shots.”
During his regular Tuesday and Thursday group drop-in sessions, the playlist tends to be a mix to please the diverse tastes on the courts. On his own, Brown often turns to reggae for an “easy, steady background.” Whenever he plays, music is a part of the day.
